Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), yesterday assured the parliamentary committee looking into the allegedly plotting his removal from office via a leaked recording that he is innocent of all the “baseless, false and wild” accusations made against him by his accusers.

He asserted that he never conspired with Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to overhear the private conversation Naabu had with the officers who were accusing him—COP George Alex Mensah and Superintendent George Asare.

Early on in his testimony, Dampare was so overcome with emotion that he had to lean on his lead attorney, Kwame Gyan, for support as he explained to the committee that the “mischievous allegations” made by his colleagues without a shred of evidence affected him personally, his family, the police leadership he leads, and the entire police service.

“Those wild allegations have caused a lot of pain to myself, my family across the country, especially my wife and my children. The pain also goes to my Command leaders and team and the thousands of policemen who appreciate the strides that we are making to transform the organisation to be the best institution in the country and reference point for the rest of the world,” he revealed.

Although the committee’s chairman, Mr. Samuel Atta Akyea, said that it was premature to forgive his accusers because he still had an upcoming in-camera session with the two witnesses, the severely injured IGP—a fervent Christian—yet found room in his heart to do so.
