James Ransone, the versatile actor known for his raw performances in The Wire and the It horror franchise, has died at the age of 46. According to the Los Angeles County medical examiner, Ransone passed away on Friday of an apparent suicide.
A Maryland native, Ransone rose to prominence playing the volatile Ziggy Sobotka in HBO’s The Wire. His career spanned decades, featuring standout roles in Generation Kill, Bosch, and the Sinister films. Most recently, he appeared in the second season of Poker Face.

Ransone was often open about his personal struggles, creditng an arts high school with “saving” him as a lonely adolescent. After battling heroin addiction in his 20s, he found sobriety and a renewed sense of purpose through his craft. Reflecting on his role in Generation Kill, Ransone noted how playing a Marine helped him understand his father, a Vietnam veteran, and reshaped his perspective on life.
He is survived by his wife, Jamie McPhee, and their two children.
