In the long-delayed trial of former president Jacob Zuma, accused of wrongdoing in an arms scandal from the late 1990s, a South African judge ordered a four-month postponement on Monday.

After a new request for prosecutor Billy Downer’s recusal was lodged by Zuma’s attorneys, the Pietermaritzburg High Court in the country’s east announced that it was delaying the case.

“This matter is adjourned to 15 August 2023 for the hearing of Mr. Zuma’s second application for the removal of Mr. Downer… as a state prosecutor in the criminal trial,” Judge Nkosinathi Chili said.

Chili’s predecessor, Judge Piet Koen, who presided over the case for several years, had previously rejected a petition to have Downer removed from office. However, Koen resigned in January.

In May 2021, Zuma’s trial began, but a series of legal issues caused it to be delayed.

The state’s attorney, Wim Trengove, once described the endless delays as “Stalingrad: Season 27” in allusion to the defense’s alleged use of entrenched delay.

In connection with a deal to buy fighter jets, patrol boats, and equipment from five European armaments corporations while he was vice president, the 81-year-old is accused of 16 charges of fraud, bribery, and racketeering.

Before being removed from office in 2018 because of claims of governmental corruption, he presided over the country from 2009 to 2018.
